Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
